You examine what information users need at each step, what decisions they must make, and what physical or cognitive actions they perform.
For example, if you're analyzing email system usability, you might document: (1) user locates the "compose" button, (2) user enters recipient address and searches for auto-complete matches, (3) user types subject line, (4) user types message body, (5) user clicks send. At each step, you identify potential problems—maybe the button is hard to find, or the auto-complete results are confusing.
Human Performance Modeling
Human performance modeling quantifies cognition and behavior to predict how well a system will perform with real users. Rather than relying on observation alone, these models use mathematical equations to estimate things like reaction time, error rates, or time to complete tasks. This approach is useful for comparing design alternatives before you've built them.
Think-Aloud Protocol: Revealing Thought Processes
The think-aloud protocol asks users to verbalize their thoughts, reactions, and reasoning while performing tasks. As someone uses a system, they continuously explain what they're doing and thinking: "I need to find my account settings... I'll look in the menu here... hmm, I don't see it... maybe it's under this gear icon?"

Personas make design decisions concrete and help teams agree on what to design for.
Personas guide design decisions early in the process. They help you recognize that not all users are like you (the designer), and they prevent design debates from becoming about personal preferences instead of user needs.
Wizard of Oz Technique
The Wizard of Oz technique presents a system that appears fully functional while a human operator secretly controls it from behind the scenes. For example, testing a conversational interface early in development, an experimenter pretends to be the AI system, responding to user inputs typed in a chat box—but a human actually writes those responses in real-time.
This method allows early usability testing before the full system exists. You discover whether users understand what the system can do, what instructions they expect, and what problems they encounter—without needing to build the actual system first. The technique gets its name from the Wizard of Oz movie: Dorothy and her companions believed they were talking to a powerful wizard, but a regular human operated controls behind the curtain.

Time Studies

Work sampling observes a job at random intervals to determine what proportion of total time workers spend on particular tasks. Interpretation Challenges
A crucial trap in usability research: interpreting user interaction data as a direct indicator of quality can lead to misleading conclusions. Imagine a user struggles to complete a task in a test, so you conclude the design is poor. But that user might be unfamiliar with the system. Or they might eventually succeed and later express satisfaction with the design. Raw behavioral data doesn't automatically tell you whether a design is good or bad—you must interpret it carefully.
Similarly, users sometimes like interfaces that are actually inefficient, or dislike interfaces that are genuinely effective. A flashy, fun interface might rate highly in satisfaction surveys while producing more errors. A spartan, efficient interface might feel boring while being highly productive. This is why evaluation methods are most powerful when combined—qualitative feedback explains why quantitative data shows what it does.
