Understanding SAT Scores
How SAT Scores Are Structured
The SAT reports your performance using two main components: section scores and a composite score.
Each of the two major sections—Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) and Math—receives a score ranging from 200 to 800 in multiples of ten. Your composite score is simply the sum of these two section scores, giving you a total score between 400 and 1600. For example, if you scored 650 on EBRW and 700 on Math, your composite score would be 1350.
A perfect SAT score is 1600, achieved by earning 800 in both sections. This is the highest possible score on the current SAT format.
Section Subscores and Performance Scores
Beyond your main section scores, the SAT provides more detailed feedback through performance scores (sometimes called subscore breakdowns). Within EBRW, you'll see a score for "Craft and Structure." Within Math, you'll see a score for domains like "Algebra" or "Advanced Math."
These performance scores help you identify your specific strengths and weaknesses within each section. For example, you might score well overall on Math but identify that Algebra is a particular area for improvement. These breakdowns are useful for targeted studying but are secondary to your main section and composite scores.
What Your Score Report Shows
When you receive your official SAT score report online, it includes:
Your composite score (400–1600)
Your two section scores (200–800 each)
Performance scores for subsections within each section
Your percentile rank (explained below)
Optional essay subscores if applicable (reported on a 2–8 scale per category)
Understanding Percentile Ranks
Your percentile rank is one of the most important tools for interpreting what your score actually means. A percentile rank tells you what percentage of test-takers you scored higher than.
For example, if you have a percentile rank of 75, this means you scored higher than 75% of all people who took the SAT. Conversely, 25% of test-takers scored at your level or higher. Percentile ranks range from 1 to 99 and are published separately for different populations: males, females, and the total testing population. This allows you to see how you compare within different groups, not just against all test-takers combined.
The key insight here is that percentile is not the same as your percentage correct. You might answer 85% of questions correctly but receive a different percentile rank depending on how difficult the test was and how other students performed. Percentile rank is the most meaningful way to interpret your performance in context.

SAT and ACT Score Comparisons: Concordance Tables
If you're considering whether to submit SAT or ACT scores to colleges, or if you're curious how the two tests compare, concordance tables are used to translate SAT scores into equivalent ACT scores.
The College Board and ACT have jointly developed concordance tables that make these translations possible. In May 2016, updated concordance tables were released to align the redesigned SAT (scored out of 1600) with the ACT (scored out of 36). The 2018 concordance tables are now the official reference point.
For practical context, a composite SAT score of 1400 roughly corresponds to an ACT composite score of 30. Colleges may use these concordance tables when evaluating applicants who submitted either SAT or ACT scores, helping admissions officers interpret performance across the two different testing systems.
