This distinction is important: models and images are different things. A model is the three-dimensional information; an image is what you see when that model is rendered.
How 3D Graphics Differ from 2D Graphics
You might wonder how three-dimensional computer graphics relate to the two-dimensional graphics you may already be familiar with. The key difference is in how they represent and process information.
Two-dimensional graphics work directly with flat, screen-based coordinates. A 2D image is typically created as pixels on a surface, or as vector shapes defined by points and lines on a plane.
Three-dimensional graphics, by contrast, work with data that describes objects in three-dimensional space. However, they borrow techniques from both 2D graphics methods. The Three-Phase Production Workflow
Creating three-dimensional computer graphics follows a structured workflow with three main phases: modeling, layout and animation, and rendering. Understanding this pipeline helps clarify how a finished image comes together.
Modeling: Building the Objects
The first phase is modeling—the process of forming the computer representation of an object's shape. During modeling, artists use specialized software to create three-dimensional forms by defining their geometry.
The foundation of 3D modeling is the vertex (plural: vertices), which is simply a point in three-dimensional space. A single vertex is just coordinates—it has a location but no substance. To create a shape, vertices are connected together to form polygons, which are flat surfaces with at least three vertices. The most common polygon is the triangle, made from three vertices connected by edges.
By combining many polygons, artists can create complex shapes. A sphere might be made from thousands of triangles fitted together. This is why 3D models are often called polygon models or mesh models—they're constructed from meshes of connected polygonal surfaces.
Models can be created through different approaches. Sometimes artists build them directly using 3D modeling software, sculpting them much like a virtual clay. Other times, real-world objects are scanned using specialized equipment, and the scan data is converted into a computer model. More advanced techniques use procedural modeling (generating geometry through algorithms) or physical simulation (letting physics engines create shapes based on forces and collisions).
Layout and Animation: Positioning and Movement
Once objects are modeled, the second phase arranges them in a scene and defines how they move. This phase has two components: layout and animation.
Layout places objects, lights, and cameras within a scene and defines their spatial relationships. Think of this as setting a stage for a film—you position your props, decide where your actors stand, and choose where your camera points.
Animation describes how objects move or deform over time. There are several techniques for creating animation:
Keyframe animation is the most fundamental approach. An animator specifies specific poses of an object at certain moments in time (these are the "keyframes"), and the computer automatically interpolates the motion between them. For example, an animator might define where a character's arm is at frame 1 and frame 10, and the computer calculates all the in-between positions.
Inverse kinematics is a specialized technique useful for articulated objects like limbs. Instead of rotating each joint individually, an animator specifies where the end point (called the "end effector") should be, and the software calculates which joint rotations are needed to reach that position. This is much more intuitive than manually rotating each joint.
Motion capture takes a different approach by recording real-world movement. Sensors track the motion of an actor or performer, and that movement data is applied to a digital model. This is commonly used in film and games to create realistic character movement.
Physical simulation automatically generates motion based on physical laws. The animator specifies initial conditions and physical properties (mass, friction, gravity), and the computer calculates how objects will move based on physics. This is particularly useful for complex phenomena like cloth, hair, fluids, or collision behavior.
Rendering: Creating the Final Image
The third phase is rendering—converting the three-dimensional scene into a two-dimensional image. This is where everything comes together: the models, the layout, the animation, materials, and lighting all combine to produce the final picture.
There are two main approaches to rendering, each producing very different results.
Realistic rendering (or photorealistic rendering) simulates how light physically behaves in the real world. The render engine calculates light bouncing between surfaces, how light refracts through transparent materials, how shadows are cast, and countless other optical phenomena. The goal is an image that looks like it could have been photographed. This approach is used in architectural visualization, product rendering, and visual effects where the goal is photorealism.
Non-photorealistic rendering applies artistic styles rather than simulating physical light. Instead of trying to look like a photograph, the output might look like a painting, a drawing, a cartoon, or any other artistic style. This is used in games, animated films, and artistic projects.
Both approaches require projection—a mathematical transformation that takes the three-dimensional scene and projects it onto a two-dimensional plane (your screen). Without projection, you wouldn't have a flat image to display.
Materials and Textures: Controlling Surface Appearance
For a 3D model to look realistic or visually compelling, it needs information about how its surfaces look and interact with light. This is where materials and textures come in.
A material tells the render engine how to treat light when it strikes a surface. It defines properties like how shiny a surface is, how rough it is, what color it appears, and how light scatters off it. Without materials, every object would look like a flat color or gray model.
Textures provide detailed visual information to materials. The most basic type is a color map (or albedo map), which provides color information. Rather than the entire surface being a single color, a color map is an image that wraps around the model, like wrapping decorative paper around a box. This allows for rich, detailed coloring without needing millions of vertices.
For added realism without increasing geometric complexity, artists use bump maps and normal maps. These create the appearance of surface detail—like scratches, pits, or bumps—by manipulating how light reflects from the surface. Crucially, they don't actually change the geometry; they only affect how light interacts with the existing surface. This is an efficient way to add visual detail.
When actual geometric detail is needed, displacement maps go further by actually deforming the surface geometry itself. This creates true surface relief that affects the silhouette and shape of the object, not just how light reflects from it.
Why This Structure Matters
Understanding the three-phase workflow and the distinction between models, materials, and rendering is crucial because it reflects how the industry actually creates 3D graphics. Each phase involves different skills, different software, and different considerations. By breaking the process into these phases, professionals can specialize in different areas while contributing to the overall pipeline. A character modeler, an animator, and a rendering specialist all play essential roles in the final result, but they work with different tools and concerns at different stages of the process.
