Introduction to Science
Science is a systematic discipline that builds and organizes knowledge through testable hypotheses and predictions about the universe. Rather than simply accepting ideas because they sound reasonable, science requires that claims be verifiable through observation and experimentation. This emphasis on testing and evidence is what distinguishes science from other ways of knowing.
In the nineteenth century, science became formalized as an institution. The term "natural philosophy"—used for centuries to describe the study of nature—gradually transformed into "natural science," marking the development of science as a professional discipline with established methods and institutions.
The Major Branches of Science
Modern science is typically organized into three main branches, each with distinct subject matter and methods: natural sciences, social sciences, and formal sciences. Additionally, applied sciences use scientific knowledge for practical purposes.
Natural Science
Natural science studies the physical world through systematic observation and experimentation. It's divided into two major categories:
Physical science encompasses physics, chemistry, astronomy, and earth science. These disciplines focus on non-living matter, energy, and forces.
Life science focuses on living organisms and biological systems.
Historically, natural science developed from natural history—a descriptive discipline that simply classified and described plants, animals, minerals, and other natural beings. Over time, this evolved into discovery science, which uses systematic data collection to uncover new knowledge about nature. This methodological shift represented a major development in how we study the natural world.
Social Science
Social science studies human behavior and how societies function. Disciplines in this branch include anthropology, economics, history, human geography, political science, psychology, and sociology.
A key challenge in social science is that controlled experiments are difficult or impossible when studying human behavior. For example, you cannot randomly assign people to different societies to test how social structures affect them. Therefore, social scientists rely on alternative research methods:
Historical methods examine past records and documents
Case studies provide in-depth analysis of specific situations
Cross-cultural studies compare different societies
Statistical approaches identify patterns in large datasets
These methods allow social scientists to gather evidence and test ideas without the controlled laboratory settings available to natural scientists.
Formal Science
Formal science generates knowledge using formal systems—abstract structures that work with axioms (accepted truths) and rules to derive new theorems through logical deduction. Formal science includes mathematics, systems theory, and theoretical computer science.
A crucial distinction: Formal sciences rely exclusively on deductive reasoning and do not require empirical evidence. They are a priori disciplines, meaning their conclusions are derived from logic alone rather than from observation. For example, a mathematical proof is true because it logically follows from accepted axioms, not because we tested it in the real world. This makes formal sciences fundamentally different from natural and social sciences, which depend on evidence from observation.
Applied Science: Putting Knowledge to Work
While basic science focuses on advancing theories and laws that explain natural phenomena, applied science uses the scientific method and existing scientific knowledge to solve practical, real-world problems.
Engineering applies scientific principles to invent, design, and build machines, structures, and technologies. Engineers use physics and chemistry to create everything from bridges to smartphones.
Medicine applies biological and chemical knowledge to prevent, diagnose, and treat injury or disease, with the goal of maintaining and restoring human health.
The relationship between basic and applied science is symbiotic: applied scientists need fundamental knowledge from basic research, while discoveries in applied fields often generate new questions for basic researchers.

Blue-Sky Research
Blue-sky research (also called curiosity-driven science) investigates domains without immediate real-world applications. Researchers pursue questions purely out of intellectual interest, not to solve a specific practical problem.
Proponents of blue-sky research argue that many major breakthroughs have emerged unexpectedly from these projects. For example, discoveries in genetics and stem-cell biology often originated as curiosity-driven investigations with no obvious practical applications at the time. This suggests that allowing scientists to pursue interesting questions freely can lead to transformative discoveries.
Computational Science
Computational science applies computer simulations to scientific problems, providing insights that are often impossible to achieve through traditional mathematics alone. In recent years, machine learning and artificial intelligence have become increasingly central to computational science, enabling applications in agent-based economics (simulating economic behavior), predictive modeling, and many other fields.
Interdisciplinary Science
Interdisciplinary science combines methods and knowledge from two or more disciplines. For example, bioinformatics merges biology and computer science to analyze vast genetic datasets. These hybrid fields often emerge because complex problems require insights from multiple perspectives.
