How Companies Collect and Use Data The infrastructure for collecting user data operates through several mechanisms: HTTP Cookies and Behavioral Advertising: Companies such as Facebook and Google use HTTP cookies—small files stored on your browser—to track your behavior across the Internet. In the pre-Internet era, information about you might exist in various places—newspaper archives, government records, old letters—but this information naturally faded from accessibility. Records got lost, archives became difficult to search, and most information simply wasn't retained indefinitely. The right to be forgotten addresses this problem by giving individuals the right to request removal of personal information from search results and some databases, particularly if the information is outdated or no longer relevant. This principle has been enshrined in laws like the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), though it remains controversial and unevenly applied, particularly in the United States. Consequences: Harassment, Stalking, and Inference The privacy harms discussed above don't exist in isolation—they have severe real-world consequences for victims.
